Airsoft geek time

Toward the end of October last year I started looking at airsoft guns. The boy child was looking at them on the computer one day and I sat next to him and was amazed. I knew about airsoft but didn’t realize how advanced it had become. The firearms are exact replicas but shoot 6 mm plastic bb’s instead of bullets. They are also a fraction of the price of the real weapons, and also the only way a civilian can get a version of many of the firearms. They also shoot full auto!!! While it was cool that I could get these, I also discovered that people get them and then go out and shoot each other at organized events. Something clicked in my head when I realized there were a lot of people in the greater Seattle area that played. I had to get involved. I always wanted a HK MP5 submachine gun, so that is what I went after. I only knew about a place called Tacoma Tactical that allows people to play inside a warehouse in a CQB (close quarter battle) type environment. The engaement range is pretty close so the MP5 would be a good choice. Of course after I got the gun I discovered a group called Snohomish County Airsoft that plays outside, known as field, at several privately owned parcels of land. Field battles require a rifle type of weapon, so I am currently saving for a field weapon. My MP5 will work but I will have to get closer to the enemy before I will be in range. Below is a photo of most of my current gear. Yes this is beyond super geeky.

Some of my gear

1. Condor Hydration Pack

2. Save Phace Mask

3. Condor Nomex Tactical Gloves

4. Condor Modular Chest Rig with Admin Pouch, MP5 Mag Pouch, and Ammo Dump Pouch

5. JG MP5A4

6. 3 JG MP5 260 Round High Cap Magazines

7. Condor Folding Mag Recovery Pouch

8. Condor Single Point Sling

Love this stuff. If you have got this far and you really have no fricking idea what the hell I am talking about, you should follow this link to the Airsoft GI website and look at their Airsoft 101 section. If you just want to watch people shoot each other and talk with Scottish accents, please follow this link to ScoutTheDoggie’s You Tube channel. He currently makes the BEST airsoft videos. Enjoy!

Time flies…

Damn. October 9th was the last time I posted. Today is March 9th. Five months. Time fricking flies. What have I been doing? Skyrim, airsoft, looking at airsoft stuff on the computer, reading comic books, getting totally pissed off at Face Book once again, more Skyrim, and once again looking at airsoft stuff on the computer. I also was asked to join a Pathfinder (Dungeons and Dragons) group. They lost two members, wanted a fourth and saw my geek potential. It is me, three cool chicks (ladies), and a very impressive DM (Ryan A). They are all current or former Cafe Javasti baristas and luckily I happen to be in there a lot and talk geek with Ryan. I met with them for the first time last Saturday and I loved it. Hopefully I wasn’t too geeky for the ladies. It is really fun to not be the GM. I might have to learn to make fancy coffee though. The group was called Baristas With Broadswords but it looks like Ryan changed it to Rain City Gamers. The plan is to play every other Sunday which will be a treat for me. I started painting a figure for my character and am trying to track down figures for the other three in the party. Female dwarf druid and female half elf rogue minis are a bit hard to come by. One last thing before I go. I started using Spotify for music and I love it. Heard a band named Daughter playing live on KEXP this morning. Might not be your cup of tea, but they tweaked something in my brain. Talk to you again in…

Built more items of Space Marine destruction this weekend. Three Killa Kans and a Trukk. Once again I’m really impressed with the detail on the GW plastics. Damn do I ever have a lot of painting to do. Lots of photos.

Ordered some stuff from Miniature Market last week and it showed up Wednesday. A box of Killa Kans, more Boyz, and a Trukk. Plus a new to me carrying case from KR Multicase.

New loot

The Killa Kans look like an awesome set. Tons of bits and should be fun to put together. Ditto on the Trukk.  The KR case is very interesting. It is made of high density cardboard and seems pretty well constructed. I did notice this morning that there was a small tear where the lid hinge/fold is. I think it was my fault when I first opened it up. Nothing a little duct tape cant fix. The trays are equal to GW trays and you can order them in any combo you want. This box will hold 72 troops and the big solid looking piece of foam is actually tiny die cut foam squares that you can pull out to make space for larger models. I am curious to see how it holds up compared to the GW cases. The main reason I purchased this case is that it was $30 cheaper than the GW one and holds more figures. I could actually get two cases for the price of one GW case.

KR Muliticase. It is freaking cardboard

Top layer is for Boyz

More Boyz go there plus room for vehicles

I think I have this case completely full already so I will be ordering another one soon. It will be mainly for Trukks and Kans. Hopefully this weekend will be a building weekend and I might try to slap some Knarloc Green on the test Orks.

Green?

Over the weekend I managed to prime all the Orks I currently have built. Nice having a covered back porch when it is raining. I have been trying to decide how to paint the Ork flesh for quite awhile. There are many ways, and being one that likes to set myself up for failure, I have decide to try the Games Workshop method mentioned here. Nob Painting Tonight I grabbed a brush, picked six models for a test run, and a pot of Orkhide Shade. It is a dark green that covers over black very well. Since I am mainly curious about the Ork flesh I won’t worry about the weapons and clothes now. I tend to paint from the skin out anyway, so this will work for me. Hopefully I can hit the GW store tomorrow and get the next color, Knarloc Green. Wish me luck.

Orkhide Shade to... ummm... shade the Orkhide

They will be pretty one day

Brother Ian came over tonight to play some 40K. We both last played 3rd edition rules and are trying to get a feel for the new to us 5th edition. Same game but tweaked just enough to cause a lot of rules questions. We both ran about 600 points so I could get my Orks dirty. The rules have a new way to pick a scenario and to set up so we spent some time figuring that out to begin with. Ended up Ian got first turn and had to set up his Dark Angels. We rolled up capture and control on a spearhead board. We decided earlier that we would play on a 4 x 4 board and shared setting up the terrain. Each of us had one objective and the winner would be the army that controlled the most objectives.

Ready to rumble

Orks about to die

Dark Angels ready to kill

Overall the game went pretty well. There was a lot of stoppage time to try and sort out new rules. Several we figured out AFTER the game was over. The final outcome had the game a tactical draw. Ian had his objective and my last two Orks were still standing on my objective. Luckily it didn’t come down to points because I got my ass handed to me. New rule change is a troop unit can hold an objective even if it only has a single model left in the squad. I am going to have to realize that my Orks are going to die many horrible deaths. They just don’t have any armor. They also suck at shooting. I can see now why Tonkka was telling me to only take Slugga Boyz. Get them into hand to hand and they are quite good. I really don’t want to make a Trukk rush army but I might have to. Sigh. Thanks for coming over and playing Ian. I’m going to read the rules again and try to figure out some of the questions that came up. Next time I won’t get pouty when all my Boyz die.

PS – Thank you Chris for the kick ass enchiladas!!!

Orks are go!

I’m still plugging away at my Orks. Currently they consist of a Warboss, four Nobz, twenty one Slugga Boyz with a Nob, eleven Shoota Boyz with a Nob, and three Deffkoptas. 582 points of Ork love. By Nerdpocalypse the mob will have added nine more Sluuga boyz, ten Shoota Boyz, a Trukk, and three Killa Kans. That should bring the mob up to 861 points. I still have three unbuilt Deffkpotas and am kicking around the idea of getting a Big Mek to run with the Kans. Of course I still haven’t painted any of them. One day I will get around to that.

DC? WTF?!!!

Posted: August 23, 2011 in Flotsam

Just remembered the most geeky thing I have done this summer! On September 1st, DC comics is rebooting their entire comic universe. There will be 52 number 1 issues released in the month of September! I have never been interested in DC or for that matter buying comics as a monthly. I like the big books that collect several monthly books in one large issue. With the reboot I saw an opportunity to get into the DC universe at the (new) beginning AND buy them monthly. To start off I picked 10 of the 52 titles to follow. A very daunting task. After some internet searching and talking to M in Wenatchee, I decided on the following:

1. Justice League

2. DC Universe Presents

3. Green Lantern

4. Batman

5. Detective Comics

6. Sgt Rock and Men of War

7. Deathstroke

8. Action Comics

9. Resurrection Man

10. Suicide Squad

Some of the titles are old stand-bys, and the others looked interesting. The best part of the monthly titles is that I subscribed to them through Arcane Comics.  All I have to do is go in and they will hand me any comics that came out that week. It is going to be really cool!!! If you want some more info on the DC reboot, check HERE.

Yes, I suck at this blog thing

Actually, instead of saying I suck at it, I am going to say I took the summer off. Since it has been two months I will fill you in on all the geek-tastic things I have been doing… Well, not a lot. Didn’t finish L.A. Noire. Maybe someday. It WAS really repetitive. Drive a car and find a clue. Over and over and over. I did just buy Deus Ex: human Revolution today and am pretty excited about it. I got a couple board games for my b-day that I hope to play someday. Two weekends ago the Wenatchee geeks came over and we hit Card Kingdom twice, Arcane Comics, and tried to hit the GW store but they were closed for Dragon Flight. M and S have jumped into the world of Warhammer 40k with both feet and I’m happy about it. S is playing Orks (good lad) and M has decided on Tau (the sneaky not to be trusted aliens). This last weekend I got to help M put together his first troops, Tau Fire Warriors. It was really fun and has helped light a fire under my lazy a$$ to start working on my Orks. The plan is for M,S, and myself to have 1000 points built and painted by Thanksgiving. Pretty sure S will have it done. M will probably have 1000 points by then. Chances are pretty good I will be where I am today.

Whole bunch of nothing

Fifteen days since I posted. Either my ADD is kicking in or I haven’t been doing anything geeky. I did watch the pilot of Falling Skies last night. It was entertaining enough but was VERY similar to Walking Dead. It will probably last one season. Played a new board game with Mike and Shea last weekend. 7 Wonders was the name and it was a fun game. Good for 2 to 7 players and pretty simple to learn. I’m hoping for a rematch this weekend. I came in last. Video game-wise I finished Brink and looked at Child of Eden. I had high hopes for Brink but I think Bethesda released it too soon. My biggest complaint was the lack of a pre-game lobby. On at least 5 of the 16 missions I spawned into the game at the end of the mission. I only had to play a minute and the mission was over. One mission I spawned with 15 seconds to go. We won, I did nothing but got credit for winning the mission. BORING!!! Child of Eden is a tempest based game that through Kinect you use your hands to move a reticle on the screen to shoot things. It is pretty. I played one level and sent it back to Gamefly. Next up is L.A. Noire. I heard it is very repetitive but kind of cool. I will let you know in 15 days.
