Started putting the CD minis together. Actually only three had to be put together. Trying to decide on a color scheme now. More later.
I realized saturday that I am now an old geek. It has been in the back of my head for awhile, but was hammered home this weekend. Out of 72 players in the Magic pre-realease I was the oldest by at least seven years (one of the players was a friend that just turned 40) and the majority of players were under 30. Probably under 25. I’m sure it didn’t help coming from Greg’s wake to the event, but it really got me thinking about it. My son was closer to the average age at the tourney than I was. That scares me. Thinking about it this morning it seems I am at a split in the path. Is it time to grow up? More and more it seems the things I truly like are the domain of the youngsters. I am now that old guy that I would see at a concert when I was younger and wonder why the heck is that old guy here? My opponents must have thought the same. I just started listening more actively to DJ/electronic music. Deadmau5, 12th Planet, and Steve Aoki. Crazy stuff. Great film on the “movement” called The Electric Daisy Carnival Experience, which I watched the other night resonated with how this is the music of the youth. The group I play with on the occasional sundays are all in their twenties. I have twenty five years on most of them. I can’t decide if I suck it up and just be the old coot, or I continue down the path I started lately and hide from the things I like. Just wanted to get that out of my head. In geekier news:
HELL HAS FROZEN OVER!!! After a FOUR MONTH wait, my Judge Dredd Miniatures Game figures showed up! Praise whichever deity you currently like. Now I have some work to do!
Strange day Saturday. Work, memorial, and a Magic the Gathering tournament. Woke up at 6 am and can’t get back to sleep even though I’m tired. Yesterday was the memorial service for Greg Hickman. I keep trying to put to words how I feel about his passing but nothing seems right. He was a customer/regular/friend of ours at the Roanoke for the almost 18 years we have owned the bar. Greg was a large man. 6 foot 8 inches. Greg was kind and gentle. Greg could be a pain in the butt if he didn’t get the bar remote controls. Greg was 57. I can’t believe he won’t ever walk through the doors of the Roanoke again. I just can’t seem to get the right words out. I will miss Greg. His memorial service, or more accurately, the celebration of his life, was packed. His sister was speaking as photos of Greg played behind her. She had been talking about her pranking of Greg and Curt and was just finishing as the photos switched again. The photo was a close up of Greg smiling flipping off the camera. It fit so perfect at the end of his sister’s speech. Cracked up the room. It was a perfect example of Greg. Goodbye Greg.
Another week has passed. Another week without receiving any of the minis I Kickstarted October 3rd 2012 from Mongoose Publishing. If I was counting, tomorrow, the 23rd of January, would be 16 weeks since the Kickstarter ended and my credit card was charged. I have given up hope of seeing any miniatures from Mongoose/Judge Dredd Kickstarter. It is just beyond silly now. Almost four months to mail two boxes of figures. I just can’t figure it out or the fact that nobody at Mongoose/Kickstarter seems to give a rats ass. If it was me I would have done ANYTHING to get the person their minis. Mongoose has them in stock on their website but I’m sure shipping would cost too much to mail them from England. Hell if I had screwed this up as bad as Mongoose I would send an extra mini or two and a nice note saying sorry. Again I know this won’t happen because Mongoose got their 100K and what does my $60 matter.
I was curious to see how hard it was to actually get Judge Dredd minis so last Monday I ordered two on Ebay. On Thursday, three days later, they arrived in my mailbox. THREE DAYS!!! It has become obvious that Mongoose needs to talk to this Ebay seller about how to mail things in the USA. At least I have something to file and paint. The Perp and Holding Post will be used as an objective.
Years ago I made a bunch of terrain for Inquisitor. It would be perfect for Judge Dredd but unfortunately I left it at someones house and after five plus years I feel it has become their property. Two months ago I was all fired up to make some new terrain for JD. I built a building out of some foam core board I had laying around and textured it. Then I didn’t receive any minis and I put the building on the back burner. Finally yesterday I went to Home Depot and had a quart of light and dark grey mixed up and went to town on the building. It needs some more weathering, but I’m pretty happy with it for now. I also emptied a container of peppers at work and thought the lid looked interesting. Started painting it tonight also. I guess it represents a sculpture or something. Mainly it is cover for minis.
My ongoing battle with the Judge Dredd Miniatures Game: Block War Kickstarter continues with Mongoose Publishing still winning. As noted in an earlier post, I bought into the Kickstarter October 3, 2012, with the shipping FAQ stating minis that were in existence would be shipped within two weeks. I ordered one old box and one that hadn’t been created yet. I figured that way I would get some minis quickly and some later in the year. Farmer Fels got his on November 5th. I waited a week and contacted the creator, Matthew Sprague, asking if there was any way to tell if my minis had been shipped. I received a curt email asking me to be patient. November turned to December and as I was getting ready to email again a post was put out that everything was getting boxed and would be to people by xmas. Xmas passed with no minis and a post that the Mongoose staff would be on holiday until January 2, 2013 and any problems would be addressed then. Another email sent on the 3rd and apparently a bunch of other people sent emails. More posts about how boxes were packed but not sent, yadda yadda yadda. Another week passes without minis and a post pops up that apparently there was a shipping error and a bunch of people got dropped from their system. After looking at it further it was discovered that my order was skipped over because I had the one item that wasn’t produced yet, EVEN THOUGH THEY SAID THEY WOULD SHIP ANYTHING THEY HAD AND NOT HOLD ORDERS. Sorry for yelling but this is beyond bullshit by now. The best part is the item that held up my order was shipped to other people two weeks ago! My last response from Mr. Sprague was that my order MIGHT be shipped next week. MIGHT BE SHIPPED. Re-fucking-diculous. I ordered two more minis from ebay today so I might be able to play a game with Farmer Fels. My guess is that the ebay minis will show up before the Kickstarter ones that I ordered three and a half months ago. LAME.
Went to dinner with the Farmer tonight. Lamented about not enough time to paint and how I never finish any minis. I didn’t paint much tonight, only some Tin Bitz, but I painted SOMETHING. This pic is for Farmer Fels. One day this Servo Droid is going to kill Dredd and then tea bag him, because that is what droids do.
